Whether you’re drawn to spectacular coastline, historic landmarks, charming market towns, or beautiful countryside, Kent has no shortage of places worth discovering. The county offers a unique mix of heritage, culture, and natural beauty, with everything from world-famous attractions to hidden gems waiting to be explored.
We’ve rounded up some of the best places to visit in Kent and highlighted what makes each one such a popular destination for residents and visitors alike.
Kent is a county in South East England, covering 1,442 square miles and bordering East Sussex, Surrey, Greater London and Essex. Often referred to as the gateway to Europe, it is the closest part of England to France.
When it comes to cities in Kent, Canterbury is the county’s only officially recognised city. Alongside Canterbury, there are 32 towns in Kent, as well as many charming villages.
From historic market towns such as Faversham to picturesque villages including Blean and Sutton Valence, each area in Kent has its own unique character, heritage and local attractions.
Kent is mainly famous for being the ‘Garden of England’. It was given its nickname thanks to its rich soil, warmer climate, and long history of producing large amounts of fruit, hops, and vegetables.
However, it’s also home to Canterbury Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the cradle of the Church of England.
We’d also be amiss to not mention the iconic White Cliffs of Dover. These 300-foot-high chalky cliffs were a symbol of hope for World War 2 soldiers returning from Dunkirk. They’re also the closest point of Great Britain to Europe, and you can even see France on a clear day!
One thing that makes Kent such a popular place to visit is the sheer variety of attractions on offer. Whether you’re planning a family day out, looking to immerse yourself in local history, or simply love to explore, you’ll find plenty to add to your itinerary.
Mentioned in the Domesday Book, Faversham Market is believed to be the oldest market in Kent. It’s held in the heart of the historic Faversham town centre, surrounded by medieval buildings and landmarks such as the stilted Guildhall and traditional town pump.
Taking place every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, you can treat yourself to fresh produce, household goods, and plenty of collectables on a weekly basis, or stop by to browse what’s on offer. The town also hosts the Best of Faversham Arts, Crafts and Food Market as well as the Faversham Antiques and Vintage Market for a few days each month.
If you’re looking for a quieter pace of life, Sutton Valence is one of the nicest places to live in Kent. Set on the Greensand Ridge, the village enjoys panoramic countryside views across the Weald and is known for its characterful homes, historic landmarks and welcoming community atmosphere.
From local pubs and farm shops to countryside walks and community events, Sutton Valence offers the best of rural Kent living while remaining within easy reach of Maidstone. It’s a particularly popular choice for families, downsizers and those searching for a beautiful village setting.
3. Blean Woods
One of the best places to visit for a countryside walk near Blean is Blean Woods, a vast natural landscape of coppice, heathland, glades and mature forest, offering plenty of routes to explore. Known for its rich wildlife, the area is home to a variety of bird species, butterflies and native plants, making it a popular destination for nature lovers throughout the year.
Even better, it’s just a 12-minute drive from our new homes in Blean. From peaceful woodland walks to wildlife spotting, Blean Woods offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Kent’s natural beauty close to home.
Just a 4-minute drive or a 12-minute walk from our new homes in Sutton Valence, Sutton Valence Castle is one of the area’s most significant historic landmarks. Dating back to the 12th century, the castle ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into Kent’s medieval past and reward visitors with panoramic views across the Kent Weald and surrounding countryside.
Located close to Newington and Sittingbourne, Milton Creek Country Park is a hidden gem that’s well worth exploring. Spanning 128 acres, this vibrant green space is home to a variety of habitats, including grassland, woodland and wetlands, creating an ideal environment for local wildlife.
Perfect for families, walkers and cyclists, the park offers miles of paths to explore, as well as community events and outdoor activities throughout the year. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a leisurely walk, spot wildlife or simply spend more time outdoors, Milton Creek Country Park provides a fantastic escape into nature.
Beyond its days out and visitor destinations, Kent’s experiences are part of what makes the county such a desirable place to live. With vibrant towns and villages, excellent connectivity, rolling countryside, and a rich heritage, it’s easy to see why so many people choose to call it home. If you’re considering a move to Kent, we have a variety of new homes across the county.
