The perfect place in Rainham: leaving the hustle and bustle of London for our forever home
After spending the last seven years in the heart of London, Toney and his wife, both registered nurses were ready for a change. The decision to leave wasn’t one they took lightly, as London had been the backdrop of their lives for years and the couple were well-acquainted with the fast-paced life that came with living in South East London. From West Norwood to Denmark Hill, the couple had moved around, always searching for a place that offered peace and comfort amidst the constant buzz of city life. But when the opportunity came to settle down and buy a home, he and his family set their sights on something different.
“We had been looking to buy in London, but our priorities had shifted,” Toney explains. “We wanted a three-bedroom house in a much quieter, safer area than what we were used to. After years of living in congested neighbourhoods, we realised we needed a home where we could feel settled for the long term – somewhere that would feel like home for the rest of our lives.” Initially, Toney and his family considered areas like Swanley, drawn by its proximity to friends and the slightly slower pace of life compared to London. However, after viewing several properties, they found themselves unimpressed. “The houses in Swanley were old and didn’t suit our taste. Every property we looked at felt cramped, and many needed too much work before we could even move in,” he recalls.
Exploring areas outside London opened up new possibilities. While Swanley hadn’t panned out as they’d hoped, it allowed them to refine their search and focus on what they truly wanted. When Toney’s work shifted to Medway, the chance to move to Rainham presented itself, and it quickly became clear that this was more than just a practical option; it was an ideal match for the life they envisioned. Rainham’s peaceful setting, paired with the convenient amenities and proximity to friends, felt like the perfect compromise between city and countryside.
“Rainham wasn’t initially on our radar” he admits. “We didn’t know much about the area, but we had friends in Gillingham, and after exploring, we realised Rainham had everything we needed – from shopping centres to daily amenities. It felt like the right place for us.” The moment they visited the property by Fernham Homes, they knew they had found something special.
A major motivation for leaving London was to provide a better environment for their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. “Her nursery is now just a three-minute walk away, which has made our daily routine so much simpler,” Toney shares. Beyond the convenience, the family is embracing the peace and quiet of their new neighbourhood. “It’s calm here. I can finally sleep without the constant noise of traffic outside. It’s a complete change from London, and we’re really enjoying it,” he says. Though Toney may need to commute into London for work in the future, he feels reassured knowing that Rainham is now their home. With its convenient transport links and easy access to the city, he knows he can enjoy the best of both worlds: a manageable commute without compromising their established roots in Rainham.
For him and his family, moving to Rainham has been more than just finding a house; it’s been about creating a home where they can truly thrive. “We walked into the house and immediately felt a connection. It’s beautifully built, and everything just fell into place. It was the right decision for us – a real turning point in our lives.”
